so you are saying that these folders will be created anyway? that was not so in earlier versions of Rhino or am i getting really old now
and if that is so, why cant the file be hidden/stored in the 3dm file directly?

They can be stored in the 3dm file.
As for the reason for not accessing them when they are inside the 3dm file:
-wim
ic. ok but that is not a very convenient solutions, it would be nice to have an option to keep it inside the 3dm file when i am not willing to expose it. since i never use anything else.
also why cant 3rd party renderes access data from the 3d file directly? why does it need the guts to be laying all over the place?
I donât understand how Rhino can sneakily move around the auto save files into the recycling bin, but not bloody clean up after itself and move the embedded files folder into the recycling bin on shutdown too?
I tried that Options and it worked for a week. now that I updated Rhino (Rhino 8) the problem ist back. Everytime I open the File (on my own PC) there ist an embedded-files-folder created
(also when 1. the files are in the same folder in the same folder or 2. the files are in the folders specified in OptionsâFilesâSearch path and their sub-folders)
Hope you can help me cause at the moment I have a lot of embedded files folders on my PC
When AlwaysUnpackEmbeddedFilesToTemp=True, the embedded-files folders are created under
%LOCALAPPDATA%\McNeel\Rhinoceros\8.0\UnpackedFiles
instead of next to the 3dm files.
I did this test when âAlwaysUnpackEmbeddedFilesToTempâ is disabled.
Everything seems to be working as expected in v8.
thanks for your reply: I will try that the next days!
also here thanks for your reply. I already found that option and chose it. but now rhino is saving the embedded files twice. once the the temp-folder and one next to the 3dm (see picture)
First, can you provide your system info? By typing the SystemInfo command in Rhino.
Second, I see you are using the German version of Rhino on Mac from your screenshots. I tried MacOS and Rhino in German, but Iâm not able to reproduce the problem. Can you disable âAlwaysUnpackEmbeddedFilesToTempâ and follow the steps below with a new 3dm model? See if the embedded-files folder is or is not created as expected.
Thanks a lot for your respond!
I tested the proposals you made but without success.
but i am really wondering why it is doing it, because:
when I am saving a template file without saving textures, all texture connections are deleted
the only thing I found is helping for the moment is: advanced settings: âŚneverembedfiles
(by the way I never had that problems with Rhino7. It is new with using Rhino8)
@andy
In @Josephine_Kerstingâs case, Rhino 8 always creates the embedded-files folders even though the texture files are in the paths that Rhino looks into. Do you have any idea about this problem?
For me it seems to be still somewhat cluttered.
For some reason, texture files are saved in an embedded-files folder in the same directory as the first Linked Block 3dm (~xref) I have in my current model, instead of the directory of the current model itself. bug?
To force create this embedded files folder, I did remove the old location of the texture files completely, however the path of the textures still refers to these old (non-existing) folders.
PBR texture maps dragged into the model as .zips are stored unpacked somewhere in my Temp folder
I use these settingsâŚ
I think it would be nice to be able to control the creation of the embedded-files folder, so that it works a bit like the Indesign âPackageâ function, where all linked instances are collected, making it very easy to share large files with other colleagues. It could also help to clean up our texture collection per file.
Sorry to bump this but I have an organizing issue with the embedded folders that I`ve tried to solve reading the forum but couldnt find a solution to this particular problem.
So im working in an architecture firm and they would like to have the embedded folders from each project assembled into one folder (can contain sub folders) The embedded folders are generally created in the same folder as the 3dm file is, but is there a way to change the directory of the embedded file folder so that it gets created in another folder than the 3dm is located in.
Thank you very much, its already been very helpful with the forum answers

Hi Felix -
No, the only other option is to place those in the userâs Temp folder.
