why cant I get a centre snap to a hexagon solid extruded from a hexagon made with a hexagon tool ?

Oh, wait… you’re probably using extrusions? If that’s the case, don’t.

Its kind of a fundamental feature of extrusions that if you want to do much of anything with them you need to explode them, which converts them into poly surfaces.
Making the existence of “extrusions” as a thing with different properties from a polysurface visible to the user was a mistake.
