Do linked blocks take up RAM if hidden?

If a linked block (from external file) is not displayed, e.g. because it’s on a hidden layer, is its geometry still kept in memory?

My assumption is yes, but perhaps there is some magic.

Yes they do consume some memory. Are you running out of memory in your Rhino session?

As said above, I assume yes. Otherwise disk access would be necessary when turning on certain layers.

I didn’t get an error message, but things got very slow after I imported (not as block) an IGES file of an electrical component. At the moment, I am modelling with quite an old machine (ThinkPad T41, original Intel Centrino chip set, 2GB RAM). Actually, it’s amazing how well Rhino 5 performs.
