You can change the display mode in layout space - Like the actual layout itself not inside a detail view. You can even draw 3D objects (try switching to ‘shaded’ and drawing a sphere or torus). You just can’t change the perspective.
I haven’t experimented yet like with trying out different backgrounds (canvases like Artistic mode). I try to leave it in Wireframe as I think that keeps things the simplest and uses the least amount of resources.
