Design strategy for controlled faceted architecture.Facet Dome

Hi everyone,

I’m currently researching strategies for designing faceted architectural forms in Grasshopper and would really appreciate some guidance from people with more experience in this area.

I’ll attach a reference project that illustrates the type of geometry I’m interested in. My goal is not to recreate this exact cabin, but to better understand the design methodology behind this kind of controlled faceted geometry.

I’m comfortable with Rhino and Grasshopper, but this is a field where I know I still have a lot to learn.

So far I’ve been looking at tools such as Facet Dome, since it already produces a similar faceted language. However, I’m interested in finding workflows that provide much finer control over the crystallization process—specifically over the location, orientation, size, and hierarchy of the facets, while still keeping the geometry coherent and manufacturable.

I’m also aware of approaches such as Voronoi, but I’m not sure whether that’s actually the right direction for architectural forms like these, especially when the geometry should respond to an interior program (bed, bathroom, circulation, storage, views, etc.) rather than becoming a purely geometric exercise.

If you were approaching this from scratch, what workflow would you recommend?

  • Would you start from meshes, SubD, NURBS, or a system of planes?
  • Are there Grasshopper plugins or techniques that are particularly suited for this type of design?
  • How would you build a parametric system that allows strong control over the faceting while still remaining flexible?

I’m mainly looking for strategies and ways of thinking about this type of geometry rather than a ready-made definition.

Any references, papers, plugins, example files, or personal workflows would be greatly appreciated.
