Decal on VisualArq wall

I’d like to place a photograph onto the surface of VisualArq wall. One on the inside and another on the outside. Is this possible. It’s not a mapping as such more of a decal. I’ve tried the decal feature in Rhino but it looks as if it’s not showing, even in render mode.

The context of the question is I have done a survey of an existing building that needs repair. I’ve modelled the building into Rhino/VA but need to add a single photograph on each side of the wall so that I can indicate areas that require attention.

Hi @steve14 if you create a wall style with different layers, you can assign a material to each one of the wall layers.

You may need to create a material with the photo as a texture, with the same dimensions as the wall face.

Does that work for you?

Hi Francesc, thanks for the reply.
In the end I exploded the wall which changed it from a wall object to a solid object. I could then add a decal using the photo. It served the purpose but it meant I lost the functionality of a VA wall. I’d kept the original model intact so I can go back to do the remaining work.

Hi @steve14 you can still apply decals on VisualARQ objects without the need to explode them. Isn’t it working for you?
You can put a different picture on each side of the wall if you like, just need to add a decal and rotate the widget.

Wall Decal

You can also just add a surface next to a wall to put a decal on it. Instead of exploding the wall.
Cheers, Jaro

Thanks Francesc, I shall bear that in mind. I enclose a clip of how the work flow ended up. I’d surveyed the building using the Matterport service so I was able to get a panoramic image of each wall surface. This was then applied as a decal to the exploded wall, after which I could mark it up. It wasn’t perfect but it enabled me to convey the idea to a contractor.

I did try that Jaro and it worked but it meant some extra work in punching windows and doors through the surface as well as the wall.

@steve14 you don’t need to explode the wall to do that. Or I’m missing something… Did you try it without exploding the wall? if it didn’t work for you, can you share more details of the process, and perhaps a file to test?

Hi Francesc.

To answer your question I started a clean file this morning with just a single generic wall.

  1. Clicked the wall, went to properties:decals, imported one image file,

  2. chose “vertical” from the Rhino command line,

  3. clicked the bottom left corner of the wall,

  4. the bottom right corner of the wall

  5. then the top right corner of the wall and the decal appeared just as I needed.

  6. Did the same on the other side.

So there was no need to explode the wall after all. I’ve no idea why the original file would not allow the same process. The effect I was getting was that at 5. nothing would appear.

Hi @steve14 I’m glad to know you made it work without exploding the wall. Perhaps you had the osnap “Project” activated in step 5, when you couldn’t do it? anyway, if you have problems with this again, just let me know.
