Cylinder mapping with cap acting odd

I have tried every variation and option, but the cylinder cap-map still looks weird. I even built the shape as a (1) solid and then (2) as an extrusion + surface from planar curves, then joined. What simple setting am I missing?

The only way I get expected results is when I have the cap and walls as separate geometry and apply different UV / widgets.

Hi Dave - I am not getting that here…does it look the same in a rendering as in the viewport display?

Yes. See image below using V-Ray. I will also upload a zipped file.

Texture-Mapping-02.zip (995.2 KB)

The objects in the zip file don’t correspond with those in the image - the cylinder doesn’t have a geometric cap at all.

Sorry, attached wrong file. Updated and fixed.

The problem is caused by reverse mapping of triangles on the top. The solution is to use custom mesh settings to create a more dense mesh.

Aha… that fixed it. It is very odd that the sides of the cylinder would be OK, but the cap needs more mesh rez. This file is going to be used for training and that mesh setting (and extra step) is fairly obscure.

QUESTION: Does any other geometry require this extra step?
QUESTION: Can this be eliminated with the next service release?

Thanks for the speedy reply!

Any extrusion geometry - I’ve had that acting weird with any mesh setting. Not sure if that is relevant to your case though.

Cylinders are quite difficult cases for the mesher. We’re hoping to improve that, but the problem is basically just that there are not enough faces on the top.

Thanks Menno and Andy. I had not run into this previously, so I’ll incorporate a ‘custom mesh’ step with dealing with extrusions or cylinders.
