Creating a 3D spinous shape from surfaces / curves

pufferfish spine.3dm (224.4 KB)

I would like to create this shape, I learned some surface tools and also rhino 7’s SubD but I still can’t manage to create this spine

help appreciated, thanks

that is a bit tricky, for nurbs i would have to ponder on that a bit longer, the fastest method which might be a starting point could be MultiPipe which outputs a SubD

use these 4 curves as input and set to radius 1, cap, Struts 1

from here on you can rework the edges if needed. you can also delete the caps on the bottom parts

scale these end parts with gumball holding shift

and use Bend draw a line for the spine starting where the longer piece starts

it actually looks great! :confetti_ball:
I only need to ask though, is there a way to ensure it becomes 100% and precisely symmetrical (playing around the gumball of the curves felt inaccurate)
(also if you could, save it as rhino 7)
thanks a bunch

I tried rotating the curves so that they align with the x-y plane, but it still didn’t do the trick

I’m guessing that to make it 100% symmetrical we are going to have to use grasshopper?

what are you going to to with it further?

Multipipe is unfortunately not that precise with symmetric vertices that are organised towards a reasonable axis affine layout.

it is a quick tool for stuff that does not need a PhD in molecular science

here i built up a subd structure from scratch and used Reflect now each of the two opposing sides from the mirror axis will update whatever change you throw at it, to get out of this use RemoveSymmetry its a bit unhandy the terminology i also have to search for it each time since i dont use it so often.

maybe that helps you further

here the file, i did not use any references here its built up entirely by random estimation, feel free to change it, remember whatever you change on one side of the red axis will update on the other

Woah :star_struck:
The spine is perfect
SubD is so cool, I’m gonna learn more about the other SubD subtools

I might make a miniature pufferfish skeleton, I’ll let you know when I build it.

Thank you so much!
