Crashing Constantly

Hi,
I am a long time user of Rhino, since 1999. I am finding the latest release of Rhino incredibly unstable.
I get crashes at least every half an hour and there is no common cause to this. It happens with small file sizes as well as large. The crash often happens when I hit the save button, great time for a crash. Crashes under all kinds of commands.
I have sent hundreds of crash dumps to Rhino support.
What are others experience with Rhino 5? I have latest service packs, latest graphics drivers. Running Quadro K4000 card with a Tesla K20c as secondary.

Are you getting any message from Windows about the OpenGL driver being restarted? Are you any more details you can describe?

@scottd, @jeff
Can you help here?

Everything sounded fine until I got to the last line…

“with aTesla K20c as secondary”

…That immediately makes me wonder if there is a configuration problem between the two cards. The first thing I would try is this:

Note: This is only for exploratory purposes, do not think that I’m recommending this as a workaround or fix.

  1. Turn off computer
  2. Pull out the Tesla K20c
  3. Boot computer
  4. Re-install the Quadro drivers (I recommend 340.66)… During installation, select the “Custom (Advanced)” option, and on the next screen, CHECK the box that says “Perform a clean installation”
  5. After the drivers install, reboot the computer
  6. Now see how often Rhino crashes.

Lastly, it’s possible that our automated crash dump processor is categorizing your dumps incorrectly… If you can, please send me one of the dumps directly and do not send it using Rhino’s automated system.

Hi John,

I had this OpenGL problem often too and the problem is 99% solved by using the Powermizer Switch and disabling the powermizer. It looks like Nvidia added this tool a few months before and now many people get crashes at different applications. I’m not sure this info helps Zeeman, but maybe it’s a trace for you to get the crashes avoided.

hello,
i am also getting constant crashes for various reasons. just today, it crashes even at double clicking to open the front view only. it happened twice. prior to that, i was trying to use the “Split” command. as soon as the curves, for the second step, was entered, it crashes.

for me, if i “Save” often, the program crashes much less. i’ve also been sending a lot of crash reports to rhino support, app crashes for various other reasons. it seems, the longer i work on one or multiple files, the more crashes i get. i’ve asked if there may be a cache capacity problem but, i’ve heard nothing back.

i’m not a super tech-y and love the program but, i would say, the version i was using in the summer was much more stable and with the last few upgrades, it’s become more unstable…

Random crashes are usually the result of video driver problems. What are your OS, graphics card and driver version? Do you have the latest service release of Rhino? Latest drivers for your card?

hello, mitch.

thanks for your quick response!

i'm working on a MAC OS 10.8.5 (tried to download X Yosemite but, it keeps giving me an error)

processor: 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7

memory: 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

video card: intel HD Graphics 4000 w/ NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M

as for the driver, i don't know where i can find that information for you. can you let me know where?

the rhino version is version 5.0 Wenatchee 2014-08-27 (523)

it says it expires oct 6, 2014

usually when i start up and there is a new version, it will prompt me to download a new version so, don't know if there is a more current version. so, let me know...

let me know what you think!

thanks a bunch!!!

nancy.

OK, this should then go in the Mac section of the forum… @stevebaer I don’t have the privilege level to do this…

@leungdesigns try not to copy/paste or quote reply the whole thread, just the relevant sections, otherwise it gets very hard to read and follow…

There is a more current version - the version you have SHOULD have expired a long time ago, and there was also a problem with the auto update system. Go to the website and download the latest version.

That being said, MacRhino may also be somewhat buggy on 10.8.5, it is recommended to update to 10.9 or later.

As far as Mac video problems go, only Marlin can really answer those, get the new version installed first, then report back here if you still have problems.

I moved this over to Mac although the original post was related to Windows. These most recent posts are Mac related, so I guess that’s the best we can do without splitting up the thread.

If you are not running the most current version and submit a crash report, you will get back an email asking you to update to the current version. if you do not give an email address when sending in that crash report, we are unable to send you this notice back, and the crash report is silently ignored.

If you don’t give an email address when submitting a crash from the current version, we cannot find the crash reports you submit and offer help. I’ve looked in several archives and don’t see any crash reports from leungdesigns.com.
