Crash of Rhino 8 after update on 20240731

Hello,
yesterday I installed the latest update of rhino 8 and today I can’t start rhino, even in safe mode. I don’t have the possibility to go back to an earlier version.
Can someone help me?

Thanks !

Not starting in safe mode if very unusual. Did you try doing a Repair? Go to Add or Remove Programs & Modify > Repair the install.

I did it differently : uninstalled then reinstalled and it didn’t work.
I’m trying to put the previous version… because I have to work!
rhino_fr-fr_8.8.24170.13001

This is the version you are looking for?

Did you add any plugins to Rhino or Grasshopper recently?

I reinstalled this version (8.8.24170.13001) and it works perfectly.
The one that doesn’t work for me is 8.9.24194.18121.
I haven’t added any plugins recently.
My main plugin that could cause problems is maxwell render.

Thanks, I’ll keep an eye out for any similar reports.

here are the 2 error lines in the windows event viewer
crash rhino 8.txt (2.0 KB)
crash rhino 8.xml (2.5 KB)

Ok, thanks Japhy, I’m waiting for your feedback.
I’m going on vacation tomorrow… so have a good vacation, if you’re doing the same!

Oh yes! I’m thinking about it right now!
I recently installed a new driver for my 3dconnexion spacenavigator…
3DxWare 10.9.0.3773
3DxWinCore 17.9.0.21038
Note that before this update of the spacenavigator software, it didn’t work very well with Rhino…
The update was a real plus.
My PC is in Windows 10

A precision which is important:
The problem is on my desktop computer (Dell T7600), more recent than the one at home on which I telework. The update is perfectly functional on my home workstation DELL T7400.
Now I’m on vacation, so I won’t be able to give my machine’s system info before August 26th.

Hello,
I’m back from vacation
I just installed the update 8.10.24228.13001 and rhino still crashes…
I looked at the event viewer and I see that a dll is involved: coreclr.dll in version 7.0.20.
I installed in version 8.08 and it didn’t improve anything.
I’m going to try installing a version 7.0410 to see.
Lastly, I would replace the file coreclr.dll version 7.0.20 to see

no improvement by installing SDK 7.0.410.
actually I didn’t see the installation details
Included Runtimes
7.0.20runtime .NET
Runtime ASP.NET Core 7.0.20
Runtime .NET Desktop 7.0.20
Language Support
C# 11.0
F# 6.0
Visual Basic 16.9

Files from event viewer
crash rhino 8_10.txt (871 Bytes)
info crash rhino 8_10.txt (1.2 KB)

Lets summarize…

8.8.24170.13001 works, anything above won’t even open in safe mode.

Has this plugin been disabled?

If you get to a point where Rhino opens please run SystemInfo and post the result. Thanks

Hello Japhy,
I finally followed the procedure in this address to move from NET Core to Net Framework.

and there, rhino 8 works, but it indicates that it cannot load the maxwell_rhino_8.rhp module
Now I’m going to deactivate the maxwell module in rhino, uninstall it and switch back to NET Core and try again… I’ll come back quickly

it is indeed the maxwell module for rhino that causes rhino to crash.
I uninstalled it and reestablished net core and Rhino works.
I’m now going to reinstall the maxwell for rhino plugin and we’ll see what happens.

That said, I still don’t understand why, on my office computer, I would have this problem and not on my old machine at home.

maxwell is not supporting rh8 yet, officially maxwell for rhino is for rh7. :frowning:

No, Ben, you’re wrong, Maxwell works with Rhino 8…
The proof, I was using it before my problem.
I concede to you on the other hand, that there were some serious problems, not necessarily resolved with Maxwell when Rhino 8 was released.

ok, problem solved !!! :grinning: :grinning: :grinning:
Reinstalling the maxwel plugin in version 5.2.6.7 now allows Rhino 8.10 to work!

I therefore advise anyone who encounters this problem to uninstall / reinstall maxwell for rhino, to solve it!

That’s all !!!

I kindly disagree: ‘it works’ is not the same as ‘it has official support’. It works on mine as well, but has either no support for my new graphics card or no light dispersion node available with the new drivers. Either of one unacceptable conditions. I had contacted Fernando from Maxwell and as always he helped with this problem before the official release, but officially only rh7 is supported.

All this is not important as you found a valid solution for the moment

does your dispersion node work correctly with that reinstall or does it deactivate it when you start the rendering?

Sorry Ben for not answering earlier; I was pretty busy.

For the operation of rhino 8 with the Maxwell plug-in… it works for me (Dell T7600 and Quadro RTX 4000), but with the problem I reported on the Maxwell forum:
https://forum.maxwellrender.com/viewtopic.php?f=173&t=46097
To this day, I still have no answer and soon 320,000 views!
I would like to answer your question about the “dispersion node”, but as I am French, I am afraid I did not understand well.
Can you illustrate your point please?
