Cplane sees a cube not at grid after Cplane3pt used

Hi
V5
Cplanes my nemesis.
Why after setting Cplane to FRONT face on this cube, do I not have the cube faces squared up to the grid ?
Using Cplane 3 point tool.

Sussing Cplanes with a cube.3dm (50.8 KB)

And after these views are squared up, if ever possible, THEN when I restore to the first save, (I called Cplane01 default rhino view) I need the view as it was when I saved that Cplane. (I dont mind right where left was as long as choosing left gives me my view I had !

How is also that achieved ?

Cheers

Steve

When using standard cplanes mode, each cplane you set only affects the viewport in which you set it.

If you want all your viewports to reflect the cplane change you are making in one then you need to switch Rhino to Universal Construction Planes:

Hi, aha :grinning:
but then

so what did I do wrong now ? :worried:
I just wanted to tilt the cub backwards 45deg as it were, so as to work on top in top, front in front and left in left.

Hi @Steve1

First set universal cplanes on in properties
Then change your view ports to what you want them to read. In this case left and front.
Last you must set the “top” plane/part of the cube with the cplane 3point command.

You are setting the front side of the cube using cplane 3point and not the top side. Note if you set the cplane 3points to the front side of the cube Rhino assumes that’s the top side and that’s why you are getting your non desired result.
See image and file if you need to.

Hi,
Thats VERY USEFUL to know.
That might just enable me to work with Cplanes now.
human instinct is to make the face that you want to work on as the Cplane face, so wanting to work on front I did the 3 point tool to the front.

as the item didnt have a visible top or even side, it was a section at 45deg through a wheel and rim/hub. I now see that its best to make a cube, with front aligned with the wheel section, then cplane 3point the top of the cube.

In the past so as to have an easy item to 3point to, I used to draw a rectangle and bring it up to be as one with the item I needed to work on, but then there was no ‘top’ to a 2D rectangle to Cplane3Point to.

It is ok then to do this in perspective view, as I seem to recall someone saying such must be done in ortho view, which I wondered was the cause.

This is being pinned to the wall !

and when I revert to the original Cplane01, it never goes back to the defaault views I love and am familiar with.

why was that and will this do so ?..become again the very first image in my thread ?
