You might want to provide more information about what you want to do.
From your image, it looks like the “Sub-Object” filter is on.

Hi Wim,

For some reason it started selecting every surface on all solids in the 3D model that I pointed on.

I couldn’t get rid of the sub-selection until the Rhino was restarted.

I am not sure if that was a bug or just some command that I have activated by chance without realising. Its all good now but it would be useful to know how to switch on/off this feature.

You can set the selection filters in the panel:

For years I have been using Rhino and never touched these settings in selection filleter. For years!
