Clipping plane freeze viewport

Hello!

Rhino performance problem with ClippingPlane objects.

Problem description

In a complex architectural Rhino file, Rhino freezes or becomes almost unresponsive for about 35 seconds when I select a ClippingPlane.

Important detail: viewport performance itself is smooth. Orbit, pan, zoom, and even moving the ClippingPlane are fast and real-time. The freeze happens only when the ClippingPlane becomes selected. While the ClippingPlane is selected, the whole Rhino UI becomes extremely slow or freezes.

A simple new file with only a box and a ClippingPlane works perfectly. The issue appears only in this complex project file.

System where the problem happens

Rhino 8 SR30
Version: 8.30.26103.11001
Windows 11 Pro 64-bit, Build 26200
CPU: Intel i9-14900K
RAM: 64 GB
Motherboard: Gigabyte Z790 GAMING X
GPU: NVIDIA RTX 3060 12 GB
Also tested with Intel UHD 770

The same project file works normally on other, weaker office computers running Windows 10, including an i9-9900K with GTX 970.

What we tested

We tried many things to isolate the issue:

  1. Disabled all third-party Rhino plug-ins:

    • V-Ray

    • Enscape

    • D5 LiveSync

    • Speckle

    • Ladybug

    • Pollination

  2. Disabled / removed 3Dconnexion from Rhino.

    • This solved a separate orbit/pan start-stop lag issue, but did not solve the ClippingPlane selection freeze.
  3. Disabled SectionTools.

    • No improvement.
  4. Tested Rhino 9 WIP.

    • Same ClippingPlane selection freeze.
  5. Installed NVIDIA Studio Driver 595.79 with clean installation.

    • No improvement.
  6. Tested with NVIDIA RTX 3060.

    • Problem remains.
  7. Disabled RTX 3060 and tested with Intel UHD 770 as primary OpenGL device.

    • Problem remains.
  8. Turned off GPU Tessellation.

    • No improvement.
  9. Turned off anti-aliasing.

    • No improvement.
  10. Turned off Windows Hardware-accelerated GPU Scheduling.

  • No improvement.
  1. Tested a new simple file with a box and ClippingPlane.
  • Works perfectly, no lag.
  1. In the complex file, when only one layer is visible and other layers are off, the lag is reduced but still present.
  • This suggests the issue is related to document complexity, layers, blocks, or object data being checked when a ClippingPlane is selected.

Current conclusion

The problem does not seem to be general viewport performance or GPU speed. The scene displays smoothly and clipping is real-time. The issue seems to be triggered only by the selected state of a ClippingPlane in a complex file.

It may be related to Rhino scanning/updating clipping-plane relationships, layers, blocks, hidden/off objects, layouts, or section data when the ClippingPlane is selected.

The strange part is that the same file behaves normally on Windows 10 office computers, but freezes on this Windows 11 workstation.

Question

Could this be a Rhino bug related to ClippingPlane selection in complex files on Windows 11?
Is there any diagnostic command, setting, or test file reduction method you recommend?

I can provide:

  • Rhino SystemInfo

  • DxDiag.txt

  • The problem 3DM file, or a reduced version if needed

Thank you!
