I have found Codex much less “thinky”, you can use any AI that supports MCP.
but i don’t like that Codex CLI, i want to use Codex inside ChatGPT Desktop app, and for this i need a plugin for ChatGPT Desktop app to connect to Rhino.
AH this is here → RH-97791 ChatGPT Destkop plugin
That’s said, you should still be able to ask Codex to add the mcp and point it to the router in the plugin location.
ah, yes! ![]()
I actually don’t need a ChatGPT Desktop plugin.
The connection from Codex is configured and enabled.
So i can forget about the CLI and simply run my prompts from ChatGPT Desktop using Codex.
Maybe you can specify this somewhere in your Getting Started tutorial.
Thanks! ![]()
P.S.
The install process becomes much more simple:
-
Install
Rhino-MCP-Platformin Rhino usingPackageManager. -
In Rhino, run:
MCPConnectThis installs/sets up the Rhino MCP router. The important executable on your machine ended up at:
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\McNeel\Rhinoceros\ai\bin\rhino-mcp-router.exe -
Open ChatGPT Desktop and switch to Codex.
-
Tell Codex something like:
I have Rhino-MCP-Platform installed in Rhino. Find the rhino-mcp-router installed by the plugin and add it as an MCP server for Codex.
Codex should create/update:
C:\Users\<username>\.codex\config.tomlwith the Rhino MCP configuration.
-
Restart Codex/ChatGPT Desktop if necessary, then test:
Connect to my running Rhino instance and tell me how many objects are in the active document.
Oh yes I forgot about that feature that I made ![]()
I have found at this point that there are strengths to each:
Claude is great at developing code, functions and plugins. I us a lot of Cowork and Code depending on how difficult the task is. Works great in RhinoAI also.
Chat-GPT 6 Astra is great at images, 3dmodeling, drawings and rendering. It works great with design language.
If I use the wrong engine for the wrong purpose it tends to burn more tolkens for worse results.
Of course that is for this month. Could change next.
I do a lot of my 3D modeling using the ChatGPT Desktop app. @CallumSykes’s Rhino-MCP works like a charm. Lately, I’ve been adding one sentence to my modeling prompts—‘Please use C# rather than Python if possible’—and it feels noticeably faster while saving tokens (though don’t quote me on that).
Of course, the Claude Desktop app works great too.
Row House by Tadao Ando (Azuma House)
(GPT 6 ASTRA - high)
Has anyone tried pi.dev so far? I enjoy using it.
It feels like a adjustable harness the way how rhino feels for the cad-world.
Endless possibilites but you can mess it up hardly!
I even like to switch models in the same session.
Very cool house @Jean-Go ! thanks for sharing!
Please, describe more the process; have you done in one elaborate prompt or several shorter ones?
Did you use image prompts with construction drawings and photos?
Thanks! I actually kept the prompts very short for this one.
I intentionally chose an iconic building that has plenty of reference data across the internet. I didn’t provide any drawings, photos, or reference links—it was done in just two simple prompts:
“Please 3D model Tadao Ando’s Row House in Sumiyoshi in the currently open Rhino session.”
(It initially tried to use Computer Use instead of MCP, so I paused it there.)
“Please check the Rhino-MCP connection and use it (port 10500). If possible, prefer C# over Python.”
P.S. To be honest, I tested three different buildings and only posted the best one… the other two were pretty rough!
Here is what I have experimented with the recent Rhino AI and modeling with Astra this sports arena:
@scottd very interesting to see results based on image prompts!
I also opened up the AI panel in rhino beta and I miss two features though, maybe you can quickly add them?
1 - usually when pressing the up arrow on the keyboard it should go trough the previously used prompts.
2 - I miss on the left a panel with recent conversations
and it also has a bug: sometimes it goes white when I click out of rhino.
The was a big release on Tuesday afternoon for this. So, make sure to get the latest build.
In my case the Arrows do work to scroll. The panel also stays with conversation information while I click out of Rhino.
The history of chats I can get to here:
Let’s look a little closer at the widget specifics.
Start a conversation and type:
What version of the RhinoAI control is running
Then send the results of what the AI widget returns.
Inputs can be wide ranging.
I have used 2d drawings (vector or raster) and other Rhino3d models as input to prompts. It seems Astra can do a decent job of analyzing the spaces and how the models are put together and then use that logic in a different model.
If also allows us to use an existing model and further model on it. AI figures out the existing model so you can address the model in normal language.
That’s a nice feature.
RH-99195 Up Down arrows should cycle previous prompts
I think we want to make sure the install is right.
If you go to Package manager, is the RhinoMCP-platform installed? I so, let’s uninstall that.
Then in Tools pulldown > Options > Plugins > Plugins that do not ship with Rhino should not contain Rhino-mcp-Platform.
And in the list of loaded plugins you should see RhinoAI with that icon:
With a version number in the upper right:
See if that helps. I worry that the prompt could not figure out the version number. That tells me the Rhino AI plugin may be old.
Hi @scottd ,
What you describe makes the whole thing much more complicated.
Do you expect the users to go trough all this process?
I was very happy to see that i can start talking with AI from a panel already part of Rhino, without installing or uninstalling anything else and without running additional commands.
What happens if i want to use both the MCP with another app and the AI panel?
We just transitioned from a installed plugin to a built in function this last build. It is possible that did not do smoothly on your install and I am trying to figure out exactly which code is running on your computer. This is a one time check to see if we need to clear out the install a bit.
We are working on a SDK framework that will allow other Apps to participate in our AI panel. Essentially other plugins could register functions. But that is not available yet.
At this point if you have external running MCP servers you can also run those in our panel.
The Rhino MCP server can be activated for outside AI interfaces by typing “MCPconnect” In Rhino. That will give the instructions to connect the Rhino MCP to other tools outside Rhino.
This is definitely an project that is changing quite quickly.
@scottd , i had to update rhino beta. I see the running version now.
