Changing the grid line count more easily

“How to make the grid bigger?” is a question I get often from my students. It would be helpful if the grid was always just big enough to cover what you have in the scene, or at least that there was an friendlier UI for expanding or contracting the grid, that doesn’t involve diving into the document settings.

Of course there are times where an auto adjusting grid would be counter productive, for example when having a big reference scene or ground plane, so it should be a smart tool. Also nice would be to have grids that have a different line count in X and Y, for example when parts are much longer than wide.

Hi Gijs - yeah, the grid extents, and how all that works needs a fresh look - some old stuff on the pile.

RH-1541 Rectangular Grid - Independent X and Y Extents

RH-12039 Dynamic grid

RH-14986 Only show the positive quadrant

but my gripe has always been what you suggest - it is not only complicated to find the setting, the settings are not very intuitive (to me) for setting the extents (count rather than extents) . I’ll try to revive that particular gripe along with your comments.
