Is it possible to stop the default window view being Wireframe every time a file is opened ?
In Rhino a file opens how it was saved including the display mode(s) for all viewports.
So if you want to change the display mode of new files just edit the template to taste and save it.

As Tobias mentioned, the template file opened controls this. Use the File drop down menu in Rhino to ‘Save as template’ you can overwrite an existing one or make a new custom template. Templates are just 3dm files saved in a special spot for Rhino.
