Change wood grain direction of Flamingo nxt in Rhino 4

Sorry if this has already been covered, but can I change the direction of the standard wood grain samples in the material libraries that come with nxt? I am using Rhino 4 and have managed to change the direction with my own imported images but cannot find a way of doing it with the standard wood libraries.

Hello,

Are you using a procedural or a image based wood material ?

Joao

Hi Joao

I’m not sure what a procedural wood material is, but I’m using the standard library that came with the nxt software if that helps. It gives me the option to change between sphere, box or plane and I tend to opt for box so that I can see the wood grain direction when applied to the rendered model.

Hi Martin,

Most of the wood materials that came with the Flamingo library are not based on images but “mathematically” generated (procedural textures).

I have just tried to change the wood grain direction in that type of textures and it seems that is not possible in NXT.

On the contrary, if you use a bitmap based texture (try Wood Birch at the bottom of the wood library) there indeed you can rotate the bitmap (and the texture) at will, see attached image.

a good thread on the subject:

Hi Joao

Thanks very much for the detailed information, much appreciated. I’m just surprised that the wood grain direction cannot be changed using the procedural textures. I was trying to render a simple coffee table, so I’ll stick to the bitmap textures in future.

I´m glad I could somehow help.
