Can't select objects to Join

Hi,

This is most likely a basic beginner issue. I have tried searching for the answer for this but nothing has seemed to work, so I would greatly appreciate any guidance.

I just got Rhino 8 for Mac today. I had Rhino 5 many years ago and I am getting back into 3d modeling after a long time away from it.

I was working on something today and I was able to select objects and join them together. I think I must have accidentally triggered some preferance or something, because now when I press “join” in the menu it says:

“Select object to join” and I can’t select any object. When I try and select an object nothing gets selected.
There are also some other questions like " Join Disjoint Meshes: Yes or No" and
“Sub D joined Edges: Smooth or Crease”
and “Sub D Symmetry: Discard or Preserve”

I don’t rememeber any of these options when I tried to join objects earlier today. I also tried selected several objects then pressing Join and that didn’t work either.

Does any one know what’s going on here? I tried exploding objects and joining them again but that didn’t work either.

I tried this:

Mesh/Boolean/Union and I was able to get the objects to join, but there were many lines added to the wireframe.

Then I tried:

Solid/Union. and I was able to get the objects to join.

Then, mysteriously, I was able to use the Join in the side menu again.

I have no idea what happened, but now the software is working as it did earlier today.
