Can't open Rhino on my Mac

Hi there,

I went to open Rhino to do some work today and it literally won’t open anything - no window, no dialogue box, just a spinning wheel of death and it says “Application not responding” when I right click on the icon in the application bar. I don’t know if this is a Mac problem or a Rhino problem but would love a solution or suggestions for how to fix - reinstall?

Thanks

Hi Sgrlawrence,

What version of Rhino are you trying to run and what is your MacOS?

Hi Japhy, I’m using Rhino 7 on Sanoma OS with the latest updates. I spoke to Apple help and they asked me to open the app in a new user which worked fine so it seems it’s a setting in my main user account but I don’t know how to access these or change anything. I also deleted the application and reinstalled the download from McNeel website.
Thanks

Hi Japhy,

are you able to help with this? I still can’t open the application in my primary user log in on my mac so I’m unable to work on it with my existing files without copying them across which is incredibly painful.

If you cannot help with this can you direct me to someone who can?

Cheers,
Stephen

You could try make sure that the location /Users/Shared is writable by your user.

Yes this all seems ok, it was also working fine up until I made all the OS updates. Is there a better place to get this kind of support?

OS updates unfortunately isn’t in our control. That is up to Apple to solve.

I know that @brian has been trying to hunt down a solution to this, but I don’t think one has presented itself just yet.

This bug will be fixed in 8.5, due out later today.

Thanks for the update, I will download the new version when it’s available and install. I’ll confirm if I have any problems with it.

Hi @brian, can you direct me to the update please? I’m sorry to chase you but I can’t do any work in Rhino at the moment.

Thanks,
Stephen

Redownload from https://www.rhino3d.com/download/, you’ll get the latest Service Release.

Thanks @nathanletwory but it’s still saying “7.36.23346.16352 | 12 December 2023” which I already downloaded and reinstalled last week. @brian said there was an update coming out to fix some problems, including the one I have, a few days ago. Are there any other options I have to fix this? The workaround with another user is causing me to waste a heap of time and I’m getting frustrated. Can I have a temporary licence to Rhino 8 or something while this is being fixed?

Is this link giving you a Rhino 7 installer? The bug is fixed in Rhino 8.5, not in Rhino 7. You can use https://www.rhino3d.com/download/rhino-for-mac/evaluation/ if you don’t have a Rhino 8 license yet to get a one-time Rhino 8 evaluation for 90 days.

Thanks for the confirmation, I referenced it’s Rhino 7 at the top so assumed that was going to be the reference to the update. Should I assume there won’t be an update for Rhino 7 in this case?

If you can run Rhino from a different user account, it sounds like something is messed up with setttings (as you’ve said above).

See info here on how to backup, reset, and if needed restore settings on macOS:

We probably should backport this fix to Rhino 7 and get a service release out.
RH-81018 Backport RH-79335 to Rhino 7

Thanks @kev.r, although unfortunately this has not helped either. I don’t know how long the backport update is going to take either so I’m going to wipe and restore my whole laptop as it seems like the only option.

The youtrack posted above says RH-79335 Wrong message when Users/Shared isn’t writable Rhino says no licenses are available.

This does not sound like the problem you described, so the backport may not have fixed your issue. Wipe and restore sounds extreme, but hopefully it will get you going again.

No that doesn’t sound like it, especially as I can open in another user profile. Extreme measures seem like my only options unfortunately as the apple tech team have scanned the laptop and can’t see anything else wrong.
