I realize that I could just edit the points and insert a new edge to deform the object as desired in the illustration below, which I’ve keep simple for illustration purposes. I’d like to accomplish this on objects with much more numerous faces
:
If this is a subd, you can use SubD Knife to add edges where ever you want. you can then use gumball to edit it as needed.
you can set the cage to degree 1
this is what i also thought on first seeing this topic - but as soon as the cage orientation and the U-V s of the surface do not match you get a crazy dense surface - still not a sharp / real crease or edge:
maybe the simple answer is:
no there isn’t.
use standard, manual solid, nurbs / subD / mesh edit tools to do so.
actually in my most recent example the new positions of the upper points can hinge on the existing horizontalish edges. But in the example below, it would be really handy if the cage edit (or equivalent) added a crease along the length of the many vertical edges. Otherwise there’s a lot of editing of individual faces, and there could be sixty of these differerent shards each needing to be frequently adjusted.
By the way, I couldn’t find a command “subdknife.” Maybe it’s only in R8, which I’ve just upgraded
Knife is v9 only.

using a bounding box set to deg 1 with a number of points you require may help
