Bug: Display Mode Pen

when i show the hidden lines it adds hidden lines to all the edges. that has been in there for quite a while

IMO the defaults for this view mode suck…

if you change them to this-

does that work better for you?

the problem is in the defaults the hidden lines are wider than the edges, so they poke out and are visible.

If you make them the same or make edges thicker than hidden lines, they look ok here…

thanks for checking Kyle.

the problem is that it just conceals the problem a bit better but it does not solve it. of course i can thicken the edges that it looks a bit better but if i do that as you see in my first image (at least on mac) the stuttering lining still shows, here i have used 4 for the edges and 2 for the hidden lines i believe it barely makes a difference if i try to thicken the visible even further it still shows. i can also use 1 for the hidden but i would assume some freedom of configuration should be possible, currently the hidden edges have to be set to 1 with zero tolerance for it not to peak out. further more if i change the colour i have no chance covering it up no matter how thick i make the silhouette, edges, depending on how you rotate the camera it looks a mess. not even talking about the awkward jagged lining itself which does not resemble any usual dashed linings.

i think @stevebaer was working on that quite some time ago, i am aware that it was left as a compromise, but it really could use some improvement, considering how nearly unusable that is in this state i still consider this a bug. maybe for v9?

This is what that looks like on my Mac with visible edges set to 2 red pixels and the hidden edges the default 1 black pixel:

Please post the output of the SystemInfo command.

RH-44754 Too many hidden lines
This is currently on Matthew’s “Future” list.
-wim

thanks wim for checking. what i meant above is when you set it to 1 pixel it gets “manageable”, though in your example it is still visible i can see the black lining or some strange black aliasing of some sort if you rotate it carefully.

if you set it to 2 than it pops out way more even if you set the the others even thicker.

the hidden lines in your video look much better, far more orderly at least, so maybe that has to do with my set up.

This is with 4 px visible and 2 px hidden on my M3:

I notice that the screen recording actually makes this worse than what it looks like on my screen.

What happens when you disconnect the external screen and only use the laptop monitor?
-wim

yup that is what i meant, it looks even worse… unless you dont see it that well because your monitor is low res or its too small or the image is too small?

here a screenshot of your video the upper right corner of the cube

i have only one 4k monitor connected to an m1 studio utlra, no laptop here. the monitor is set to emulate 2304 x 1536 (not sure if the emulation is still happening though i assume so)

agreed…it’s a cludge at the moment and as Wim said, It’s on the list of things to tune up- thanks for reporting it so we can bump it to the top…
