Broken history when dimensions duplicated

I have a group of dimensions that I want to use across a number of similar shaped surfaces. The original dimensions all are set and snapped to specific key points. The plan is to move those key points around for each object that needs dimensioning instead of needing to adjust the control points of the dimension. When I try to duplicate the dimension layer all history for those dimensions is lost and they no longer update when the key points are adjusted. Is there a way to carry the dimension history forward when the layer is duplicated?

One work around I’ve found is using the copy command, but then I need to go back and update the layers to prevent a jumbled mess.

The work around is using the ‘Copy to Clipboard’ command, then ‘Paste’. ‘Copy/In Place’ breaks the history
