Just because we don’t have a built-in solution right now does not mean that we aren’t working on the issue. We just don’t have anything to show yet and therefore aren’t going to lead you on with promises of the future.
The plug-in that Scott recommended has worked well for several users and may be useful for you too until we have something built in.
Still the Block Plugin does not always work well with third-party apps like VisualARQ. Clicking through nested blocks within blocks would be very powerful. Hoping to see already an improvement in 9.
We are hoping to support nested blocks and non uniform scaled blocks, but at this point it is still wishful thinking because we don’t have anything yet for you to try.
How does it get in the way of Visual ARQ? Details here would be good to figure out so that any future solutions can test against any potential VA problem.
I understand that rewriting the whole Block tool would be a lot of work. I was just wondering whether there might be a less “expensive” solution that would allow us to navigate through nested blocks by double-clicking. Even just double-clicking would already have a big impact on workflows.
To give you a bit more context, for example, I have nested blocks where the objects inside the block are placed directly next to an object that is not part of the block. If I want to make changes in relation to that object, I have to quickly enter the nested block. This becomes quite a hassle, especially when you have to make many changes in a short period of time or deal with several similar situations one after another. This is just one example, and of course it becomes even more difficult when you have many blocks or multiple blocks with the same name nested. The solution is usually a workaround, for example copying the nested blocks out of the parent block into the same position, making the changes there, deleting them again, and so on.
I personally can’t provide any up-to-date feedback on the Block Edit New plugin because I deleted it after experiencing problems with it in V-ARQ. After a quick search, I found this:
@user2745 I confirm we have been able to fix the compatibility issues between VisualARQ and the BlockEditNew plug-in and they will work fine in the upcoming VisualARQ 3.10 update. I’ll let you know when there’s a public version to download.
Oh, this is very useful. I’m glad I finally found something useful for block/group editing (upset at the same time, Rhino has ignored block/group editing all these years).
I have been using some janky macros like these
Additional note:
The linked plugin is great. You can even show and unlock other objects while group/block editing. Once save get out of group/block edit, it won’t mess up the group or block. I’m so annoyed I only found about this now. Mcneel team, this is how group and block editing should have been in Rhino.
i dont understand why they dont approach the guy and buy it from him and integrate it with rhino. also me as and engineer have been producing custom c# components in grasshopper without any programming skill except for logic and general intelligence lately with ai. is ai something that is going to speed up the development process of rhino? but also i regard more quality over quantity, bug fixing and core enhancements rather than endless functions. i need old tank rather that plastic car that breaks at every corner.
@user2745 The known issues between VisualARQ and the BlockEditNew plug-ins have been fixed in VisualARQ 3.10. You can download the most recent Release Candidate version here: VisualARQ 3 - Version 3.10 RC2 released
@scottd would be really amazing if Rhino 9 can include this plugin’s Block Edit New functionality natively, as exiting block edit with large file environments can sometime crash the file. I believe that has to do with how Block is implemented on the backend.
Will try to do that next time, most times it doesn’t really crash, just takes a long time (5-10 mins) to process while exiting block edit mode, while using the Block Edit New plugin with the “Hide Rest” turned on.
Unfortunately I can’t as it contains confidential client info, let me see if I can construct a similar environment that cause the same issue, thank you for getting back to me!
