Banking + racetrack

Hi

Might be a very basic question, but I cannot make a banking race track surface along a spline.
Is there something build into rhino that can do this or a plugin?

I have attached a very simple version as a rhino file, but want to du a large undulating track.

Thank you,

Rolf

One way would be to make a spline that represents the upper edge of the roadway and another spline that represents the lower edge - then Sweep2 a line along them and use AddSlash to keep the alignment of the isocurves straight (or make multiple line profiles for the sweep).

Hi Rolf. I’ll attach a file and if it resembles what you’re after I’ll let you know exactly how I made it. It’s basically just using Blendsrf. Lofting multiple objects would be another way to achieve a banked race track with spiral curves. Creating something mathematically perfect (or to highway design standards) would be beyond me right now it’s been years since I’ve done any real road design.

Yes. Did not know the addslash option, so will check this.
I did do a version offsetting curves from a central spine, but manipulating these into a banked upper curve and lower curve looks to be to much handy work to make a simple design look neat and I want to do something elaborate

Thank you! Yes, this works.
The end result I want to achieve is a little like a scale electrix track on steroids, so am hoping this solution will work for an extended design as well?
Would love to see how it works…

I made a quick video:

It might still be uploading when I post this. This is a quick and simple solution there’s actually lots of math that goes into making ‘real’ curves. This might be good enough for your project but maybe not?

Well, if you are looking for a one-click solution, no. What I offered is a method that allows one to precisely control the roadway width, elevation and banking (and even the roadway surface profile) by constraining the surface to the edges and connecting the inner and outer edges at the right places with the correct section. Making something detailed and accurate is not always instantaneous.

If Rhino curves had tilt like in Blender then there could be a one-click solution.

Yep! I work in C4d as well and this does also not have this function…

Late reply, apologies.
Your method is great and I will look to use this.

Thank you!!! Will dive into this today.
