Apply template to opened documents

The default template seems to be only for new documents. When a unitless document opened, rhino for whatever bizarre reason applies its own default settings, the settings user has no control over (I’m interested to know the reasoning behind that decision)
How do we apply a template to already opened document without jumping through hoops of creating new document with desired template and then importing the file?

So, we can simply open file (DXF) from let say email or zip file and then using a command, hotkey or even autostart the script to apply the template for such files?

Thank you.

This is not true.

Rhino uses all of the settings in DWG and DXF files, including the fact that these files have no unit system.

You’ve been told numerous times, in numerous threads, how to solve your problem.

That’s fair, I admit “apply” was a wrong word to use. I understand it overrides default settings with settings found in the file, but these default settings the user has no control over and that was my point.

Yes sir, your solution to tell my customers to send me .3dm files instead of DXF is absolutely best advice. Thank you!
Besides your brilliant solution, none of other solutions I’ve seen would allow open files directly from email or zip files, therefore this topic was created, especially that replying to old topics evidently is frowned upon here…
