Apple Silicon Memory: How Much Mac RAM Do You Need?

Curious if you have any feedback to share on the M4pro yet?

I can confirm that Rhino seems to run really nicely, I haven’t chucked any of my really big projects through it as yet although I don’t see any reasons to think there will be an issue. I grab some basic viewcapturestofile in different display modes too, and place them on my layout sheets, rendering is basic but for anything like that I have a windows machine to run Twinmotion. My previous Mac was one of the last intel machines so I don’t have previous Apple Silicon to compare it too, but seems great so far.

I’ve bought an M4 Max with 64GB. It’s a nice machine, but unfortunately the enormous Grasshopper document I’ve been building for the last 12 years is unusable due to constant crashes.

The .gh file has many thousands of elements and multiple layers of clusters.

The file itself computes about 9 to 10 times faster than it did on the ancient Intel Mac Pro I was using previously - finishes in 40 seconds now compared over 6 minutes before.

I’ve just tried removing the last remaining third-party plugin - MetaHopper - from my system, but the crashes remain.

I’m dealing with support and hoping for some progress.

So my use case likely has little bearing on the original poster’s use case - no rendering for me and entirely Grasshopper.

Wondering if any other Grasshopper users are having stability problems on GH Mac.

Nice to meet you.

I’m considering a mac M4 or M4 pro when I’m about to buy from Intel to new silicone.

I have been using an intel macbook pro 16, 64GB,1TB during my school years.

I have mainly used it for modeling industrial products.

I think now that the specs were too much for my use.
Later I realized that the Windows version of rhinoceros is superior in terms of rendering and plug-ins.

From now on, I am considering to use two machines, one for modeling and Grasshopper on mac and the other for rendering on desktop (windows).

What kind of specs would you recommend?

Ex.
Macbook M4 14 inch 16GB ,1TB

Or

Macbook M4 pro 14 inch 24GB~,1TB

Do you think this is a better option?

I would be honored if I could get some advice from you guys.

I am also jumped from a 2016 Mbp (intel and Radeon pro460) to a M4 max 64Gb and it is a huge jump. In my personal opinion you get a lot more with the pro Version for Rhino. The memory bandwidth helps you with a nice flow - also you‘ll get more performance Cores and the GPU also is a lot more capable in my opinion. Yes it is more expensive but in my case (and you also come from an Intel one) I am using this machines in long term and maybe here is the pro also a better solution for a fluent Rhino future proof workflow (of course depends on the projects).
But don‘t get me wrong I see friends with an m1 - 8 GB RAM and they are totally happy with their Rhino speeds. Depends on your work. The pro has also a second Fan for better cooling and I heard about that this helps to be more silent too. The M4 is a bit less energy hungry.
