Any usage for Light-weight extrusion objects?

How about it? I always set the useextrusion is off, and there is no change form rhino 5 to 8

Been discussed many times, the answer is 99% of the people do not need them, but they still remain default for the 1% that might.

And, as many times before…
If you have it one and it gets in your way, please let us know so that it can be fixed.

Hi,

I use lightweight extrusions all the time for what is called “grey boxing” designs and for arraying if possible. I think they’re wonderful addition to Rhino but I am aware of them causing downstream problems if you don’t explode to polysurface first. Most of the time editing an extrusion will change it to a regular model anyway without having to explode for conversion.

Hi Roland -

Please provide specific information about those downstream problems.

A post was split to a new topic: Light-weight extrusion objects in Grasshopper?

The “problems” I’ve encoutered with extrusion objects are some commands which work with surfaces have not worked with extrusions. I try to keep the option to use extrusions turned off so only encounter this problem when extrusions occasionally.

The larger issue for me is McNeel’s insistence when adding an optional feature such as lightweight extrusions to make that feature the default. McNeel’s rationale is this forces users to become aware of the new option. But it annoys users who do not want to use that option.

Specific information about that would be great to have.
Thanks,

Hi @wim

Sorry I don’t have any downstream problems with extrusions, I’m merely requoting what I read on the list. I did see some posts where people had problems but then as a developer you most likely know of them. I think Bobi and Mitch wrote about it.
