Any tips dealing with lots of geometry

I am doing some renders that have thousands of spheres.
Are there any settings I can adjust to help speed up renders? Would converting to mesh help at all?

You can do that using as few polygons for the mesh of each that you can get away with. The other trick I like to use is to Join separate meshes into one disjoint mesh object as well. They all need to use the same material if you do that though. One mesh instead of thousands will speed the transfer of the geometry to memory before the render begins. It will also make the display performance faster too.

If you can use blocks. And if you use blocks than blocks with meshes could be useful to keep the display speed fast.

If you use Vray you can also convert the geometries to VrayProxy.
The proxyies are handled faster from Vray .
