Anamorphic

How can a phrase transform into a portrait, using only light and geometry?

A client asked me to create an anamorphic sculpture from the text “reality is merely an illusion.” The challenge: when light passed through the piece at the right angle, the shadow should reveal Einstein’s face.

Using Rhino + Grasshopper, I built the parametric model, ran projection simulations, and prepared everything for 3D printing. The outcome: a sculpture where text becomes portrait, proving how design and computation can turn ideas into working solutions.

This is where precision engineering meets creativity.

Did you simulate the shadow in Grasshopper while creating this design, or did you do it manually?

For something like this, you don’t need to simulate the shadow while working. Because the image comes directly from the light source and the source is more or less a point, you can raytrace the edges of the image to the source and then subtract that from the model. That’s kind of what that pyramid form in the second image is, if that helps to visualize it.
