Aligning the Gumball with a planar curve

I have a planar curve that I extracted from a polysurface, I’m working on a template where the polysurface had to be moved at an odd angle for it’s application. The curve is closed, and I’d like to re-align the gumball to 90 degrees to the plane of the curve so I can re-extrude the shape and make it longer and remove some reference marks from the surface.

This is an area that I’ve not had much experience with, so any help would be appreciated.

Normally if you set the Gumball 'to object" (right click in the Gumball pane in the status bar or on the white circle on the “tail”) and you select a planar curve or surface, it should align to the curve/surface plane.
