About Rendering RhinoLands vegetation in D5 (and others)

Hi there!

Well. I keep trying to use RhinoLands and until now good.. but the rendering of vegetation keeps being problematic.. and I want to ask :

  1. As you can see in the screenshot.. in d5 the vegetations rendres awfull.. a “black” square.. I can guess that the opacity map is not translated correclty into D5. On the other hand I have to say that this opacity has been problematic too in other programs (I use Bella render too and the opacity maps in vegetation were too blame to a lot of the speed issues in the rendering).. So my suggestion is that 3d trees should not rely on opacity maps but real geometry (easier said than done.. I guess… and I don’t know how efficient in time that would be.

Any suggestion you may have so I can render correctly the vegetation of my project from RhinoLands into d5 would be highly appreciated (or even to translate the RhinoLands into d5 assets?.)

Thank you

Hi,
We tested RhinoLands with D5 about 1 year ago, we reported the problem of their LiveSync plugin with Lands Design plants, and they did some fixes. We tested LiveSync plugin 1.1.0.0002 and it was working quite fine. Furthermore, starting from Lands Design 6.5, we added a way to use in D5 the “very detailed plants” (those generated for rendering) instead of the plants you see in the viewport (lightpoly versions). To achieve it, you must use the

D5LIVESYNCSENDMODEL

command. This command sends the geometry from Rhino to D5 only once, rather than being synced all the time. You also need to set the vegetation quality to any value other than “as seen in the viewport”, in the Document properties:

Very detailed plants still use opacity maps for leaves, but the triangles are much smaller.

I don’t have D5 installed right now to test it, but it should keep working in their recent updates. Can you specify which D5 version you have installed?

Thank you for your advice. I set it to Final quality.

I’m now using D5 Lite for Rhino (beta), and I’m really liking it. However, in Lite, opacity maps appear as solid black. On the other hand, the standalone version (using LiveSync) doesn’t handle opacity maps correctly either. There, the same maps appear as semi-transparent black instead.

I’m contacting the D5 Render team because I think this is something they could fix. If you also have some contact with them, perhaps you could point this out as well.

Thank you again for your support!

(By the way I am using D5 V. 3.1.0.0746.. and Lite for Rhino (beta) 1.0.0.0075

I recommend you to update your D5 LiveSync plugin for Rhino since your version (1.0.0.0075) is older than the one that fixes the black textures from Lands plants (1.1.0.0002). Latest version seems to be 1.1.3.0016.

Hi @albert

I just realized that there was maybe a confusion.. D5 Lite is a different resource than D5 Livesync.. And I confirm. I have LiveSync 1.1.3.. and it fails with RhinoLands Vegetation..(you can see the “slight” opacity here)

And in D5 Lite (no livesynch.) it is a completely black map

Oh, sorry, you are right, you have the latest version.

I would try to change the render parameters (lighting, engine, etc.) to see if that makes any difference. Maybe the texture color is there (the textures are properly imported) but they are rendered too dark.

If you find no way to see any color, then that must be reported to D5 developers again. Their product should display all materials as they are seen in the Rhino viewport and in Rhino render. If RhinoLands plants look good in Rhino, the issue is in D5.
