AA Greece Visiting School 2016: Chania Progressions - October 4-14, Chania (Greece)

AA Greece Visiting School 2016
Chania Progressions
October 4-14, 2016
Chania (Greece)

The Architectural Association School of Architecture is visiting the city of Chania in the island of Crete in Greece.

In 2016, the AA Chania Visiting School will continue to pursue its design agenda concentrating on the bigger picture of the Chania city’s characteristics. The city of Chania is the second largest city of Crete. Chania can be divided in two parts: the old town and the larger modern city. The Visiting School will revisit the way by the built environment has been put together and will explore design possibilities to improve connectivity and functionality in the city. Interactive design coupled with generative form-finding techniques for the fabrication and assembly of a 1-to-1 scale prototype will be investigated.

Each year a series of software tutorial sessions takes place to allow participants to develop their basic skills of controlling models parametrically and producing interactive presentations. These sessions also embody manufacturing techniques, enabling a hands‐on experience in architectural design. Also, lectures and special events advance the participants’ understanding of new design anatomies and the development of a theoretical background on topics including machinic control, computational space, and complexity in systems, and innovative urban design approaches.

Prominent features of the workshop/ skills developed

  • An active learning environment with a large tutor to student ratio, enabling personalized tutorials and debates.
  • The toolset of AA Greece includes but is not limited to Maya, Rhinoceros, and Grasshopper.
