Hi, this is my new project: a 1934 Ford hot rod. I hope you enjoy looking at it.
One more question—is there actually a solution for Rhino 7 to get the colors to display correctly again in the material selection? After I installed the RTX 3060, some things aren’t working the way they used to. For example, the cross-hatching bump texture no longer works for plastics, and the “Metal” slider in the colors panel doesn’t do anything at all anymore. Thanks in advance.

that all looks fine, (although I do no see what service release of rhino 7 you are using)

can you post a test part with the failing materials assigned and some screen shots so we can see what you see?

I’ve attached two screenshots here—one shows the version I’m using, and the other shows that in the material selection, all colors and materials are no longer displaying correctly. Also, as I mentioned, the bump textures for the “Plastic” material are no longer working, and when you select “Paint” as the material, the Roughness/Metal slider no longer works—but this has only been happening since I installed the RTX 3060.

TI don’t have any test files—my files are usually well over 600 MB.

all the textures work here, but they have to be in the small or x small scale to show up.


fun fact if the effect is not strong enough, simply convert the material to a custom (or PBR) and crank up the bump intensity. the default for the default materials is only 10% cranking it to 50% or more really amplifies the effect.

Yes—the bump textures work for me with metals too—but not with plastics, and as I said, the “Roughness/Metallic” slider for colors doesn’t work. In your images, you can see that the sphere is displayed in the correct color in the material selection—but in my image above, all the spheres are pixelated.

odd.. plastics are working here but the effect is pretty subtle. I’d switch to custom or pbr and crank up the strength a bit.

for your pixelated previews, check this-

Looks like you have viewport sharpness not set to fully sharp. It controls also the thumbnail rendering resolution.

In Rhino 7: Tools > Options > Cycles.
In Rhino 8: Tools > Options > Rhino Render.

if that fails check -
“You probably just need to clear out the RDK caches. Try running TestClearRDKCaches and restart Rhino.”

In a new file I’m currently working on, the RDK cache seems to be working—but so far, there’s only one material being used. In the file for my '34 Ford, though, nothing has changed—everything is still just as pixelated as before.

if you select all and copy the model to a new blank file does it behave?

if not, it may be worth doing a repair of your v7 install.

go to add remove programs in windows, find rhino and run modify>repair. restart and try rhino again.

Fixed Rhino—restarted the computer—result: still the same issue in the '34 Ford data set—copying the data set to a new one didn’t help either—in my new project, at least that one material is displaying correctly so far—I think I’ll just leave it like this for now and see if it works again in the new project.

I spoke too soon—the materials are pixelated in my new project, too—but the RTX 3060 has already caused me a lot of trouble during installation anyway—it wasn’t just a matter of plugging it in and being done—even now, some programs still don’t work, like Nikon Capture NX (32-bit)—oh yeah — at the beginning of this month, I installed a driver update—after that, when rounding edges, I had to wait forever for the surfaces to be identified—so—I rolled back the update again—apparently the RTX cards are geared more toward gaming than CAD programs.

there are two drivers for rtx cards.. a game ready driver and a studio driver.

often one will work great and the other not so much but it’s hard to tell which driver will work best with which system.

when you update a critical detail is to run the driver install as custom/ advanced and look for the clean install check box. Use that and then restart the computer after the install.

if you do a basic install and there is a problem with the driver, it’ll just patch over the problem. A clean install starts fresh.

I’m aware of the two driver versions—I’m using the Studio driver—and this is what I do now: I never change a system that’s already running.

try the game ready if you are game to have a go… I have not been able to figure out why, but some systems hate one driver over the other.

You mean completely uninstalling Rhino and setting it up from scratch—I actually did that just before I installed the RTX 3060—but I don’t really feel like doing that right now—setting everything up all over again. I think the folks at NVIDIA should really focus on programming their massive drivers (over 980 GB) properly.
