Hi All,
I’m using the latest build 5A552. I click on Toucan materials and am presented with a small empty dialog box. I reinstalled the previous version of rhino for mac over the top and I got toucan materials to show. I then put back the latest version and lost toucan materials again. I’m using Mavericks OSX.
I cannot duplicate this. Please post your Rhino info from the About Rhinoceros dialog and post a screen shot of the small empty dialog box that you see when you display the Toucan materials dialog.
Marlin,
I don’t know whether this information will help but I have installed the 5A552 version again and bought in a model using toucan materials that I created in the previous beta of Rhino for Mac. I have opened the object properties on an item and I am able to edit the material etc, but, as you can see, neither Toucans default or my own materials show in the dialog box.

Marlin,I did as suggested and reset the prefs and downloaded a new version but am still failing on loading materials in Toucan in this version of rhino for mac(5A552).As an experiment. I removed all traces of rhino, including the app, the application support directories and the preference files. I reinstalled rhino version 20140917 and this is what I got.Unfortunately, this version will expire soon.
I have attached the console log filtered for Rhinoceros. I know nothing about code but I think I spot the trouble. ‘Clean my mac’ could be the culprit. What do you think?
I am very new to using the Toucan Render tool in Rhino for Mac, but I appear to have the same issue that the OP was experiencing. When I click on the Toucan Materials option in the Render pulldown menu, I get the same blank dialog box. My version of Rhino for Mac is 5A522.
Unfortunately, there is not enough here for me to tell the problem. Is the Toucan window empty with any 3DM model, or is just one model? If the latter, please send the model to us so we can duplicate the problem.
Hi Marlin,
Unfortunately, I get an empty Toucan Material Library window regardless of whether I bring in a previous built model with materials applied or whether I create a new scene in build 5a552.
In the case of the former scenario, I can edit the materials of the model but cannot change materials as there is no materials to select.
The rendered image is a scene created in a previous build with the basic toucan library materials applied.
The second scene was created in Build 5A552 and has no materials available to apply or edit.
The two files are attached.
I hope this helps.
I thought of another possible reason this is happening just to you. Perhaps you have a material in your personal library that is causing the material browser to fail.
In the Finder, hold down the Option key and select Library from the Go menu.
Navigate to Application Support > McNeel > Toucan > Materials
Zip the entire folder and email it to marlin@mcneel.com
I stopped Network connection of Little Snitch and opened rhino, still no joy. I safe booted and tried, again, no materials. I dragged a copy of rhino from my time machine backup from July this year ( Build 517 )I Installed as a copy rather than overwrite. Build 517 opened up and displayed the standard Toucan materials but not my collection.Very strange indeed. Would that point to the actual latest Rhinoceros apps as the problem?
Other users are not reporting this and I cannot duplicate this, so it indicates that there is something on your computer that is interfering with the latest Rhinoceros apps.
If you were to create a brand new user on your computer, then the Toucan browser would perhaps work. If you loaded Rhino on some other Mac, I’m sure that the Toucan browser will work there. But I’m out of ideas of what might be on your computer that is triggering this problem.
I came to the same conclusion myself. In the next week or so I intend to upgrade to Yosemite and I’m hoping that may resolve the issue. When I do that I’ll let you know the outcome. For now, at least, Rhino is flawless in all other operations and I can live without the renderer to accomplish my designs. Thanks for your assistance with this conundrum.
