Rhino, vray and file size

I have an interior scene that is 30 mbs when i save it as geometry only but before that it is more than 800 mbs. I guess that is caused by vray. Is this normal or is there something else wrong?

Regards, René

Hi @rene1, This sounds like it could be mainly 2 x contributors to the size, although there are a few others.

  1. Try SaveSmall and see how large the file size is.
SaveSmall saves everything except the render meshes, so if the file is smaller after savesmall then the size difference is all the render meshes.
  2. Try running the Purge command and then save the file out with save small and see what the new file size is like.
  3. If you are trying to send the file to someone and they don’t need all the Vray materials etc. then run:
    -_SaveSmall SavePluginData=No
WARNING: Do not do this on your main workfile else you will lose all your Vray settings and materials! Save to a new Filename!

Rene,

Which version of V-Ray do you have installed?

Hi Michael

thanks for the input. Save small hardly makes a difference. Purge removed some unused materials and removed 100 mbs of the file. The issue seems to be vray using a lot of memory for its materials.

Hi @rene1, 700+ meg sounds like alot for Vray to be responsible for.
You could also try one of the test commands that one of the Mcneel guys mentioned somewhere else on the forum to remove embedded images from old pictureframes etc.:
TestPurgeBitmapTable
And then save as another file name to be safe, and see if that has an effect on your file size. Michael VS

@rene1,

The latest stable VRayForRhino is Nov 14, 2014 2.00.25251. You can check your version under the menu V-Ray->Debug Window. In the latest release we did everything we could to reduce duplicate materials being saved in files, which was a known problem in earlier releases.

if you still think VRayForRhino is causing this bloated file size can email the file to vrayrhino@chaosgroup.com and have them take a look, as @mvyess said, it could be embedded images and/or any other plugin causing these issues.

Hi Matt

installed the latest version and that made a huge difference. Now it is back to 130 mbs, that is more like. Thanks for the tip!

Is there a possibility that your file is 30 MBs on the disk, but takes up 800 MB of RAM? It’s not clear from the post that the FILE itself is going from 30 MB to 800 MB. Its sounds like you are comparing file size to RAM used.

If my assumption is correct, then that actually sounds about normal. Rhino can use up a lot of RAM, especially if you do a lot of complicated operations (even copy and paste) which causes that data to be stored in RAM for future UN-dos. I have commonly seen a 100 MB file use up 3GB or more of RAM, depending on what I am doing.

V-Ray also takes up a lot of RAM during renders, especially when it loads and un-loads multiple material texture maps.

This is why you have a 64-bit OS and can never have enough CPU power or RAM when doing 3D. All of my recent 3D workstations have 16 GB of RAM, and a few have more. RAM is cheap and 3D is greedy. :imp:

Also I have the impression that my file sizes are extreme grown in the last months/year. I have files larger than 1 GB and if look at old project files from Vray 1.5 the sizes was much smaller. Maybe it’s a wrong impression and my projects are more complex now, but I understand why René ask this question.

It is not about RAM use but the real file size that is shown in my computer. It was solved by installing the latest build of V-ray. The file size is now 130 mbs which is quit right in my opinion. Problem solved!

Regards, René

Dear Micha

you have the latest build of vray? 2.00.25251 should be the one. I had a slightly older one and installing this latest version solved the problem for me. Hope it works for you too.

Regards, René

I use a nightly build 2.00.25462, so maybe my projects are more complex than in the past.

Hi Micha

what is a nightly build?
