Can you try RC2… http://www.rhino3d.com/download/rhino-for-mac/5/evaluation

I believe there is a fix for the memory usage issue you reported. Let us know if it’s any better please.

installed latest version and still have issue with memory usage starts off around 200MB then creeps up to 13+GB before it crashes.

@marlin @dan any ideas based on the info here?

now easily repeatable when adjusting colors of materials in the apply materials dialog.
not necessarily related to memory usage since crash happens minutes after re-boot.

Thanks for the quick info. I will see if I can duplicate this here with your model.

We have a Work In Progress (WIP) version with some changes that may help with your memory usage problem. You can find a link to the WIP version in this article: Rhino for Mac - Removed Features. Please download and try the WIP version and let us know if you see any change.

Thanks.

Hi Fred,
Thanks for the system report.

Can you duplicate it on demand? Or is it more illusive than that?
If you can repeat the crash, we will need the files and the exact procedure/steps to duplicate the issue here in our lab. I did not see the files in this thread. Let me know if I missed them.

If we can duplicate it here, it is likely it can be fixed.
Thanks for your help.

Sincerely,
Mary Fugier

Hi

Sorry, Some of my message got truncated. The crash happens usually when changing colors or using the sliders in the apply materials dialogue. Example: changing texture map transparency or reflectivity using the slider.
Also happens when using mouse wheel zoom

Hi Fred,
Now I can see the text “File was uploaded PHA-1 3D K-1.3dm.zip” was upload.
However, it is not a link, so I still can not get the file.
Would you send the file to me via email to mary@mcneel.com?
You can also use our support file upload system here.

I did try moving materials sliders on one of my models for gloss, transparency, IOR, reflectivity … for materials, texture map, environment map, transparency map - but I could not get the spinning color wheel or Rhino to shut down. I am using the latest Build number = 5A855.

In a pervious versions, I did see something similar a couple times, with the color wheel lock up.
It was not repeatable and only my Rhino shut down. My machine did not reset, as you describe.
And in comparison, when I reopened Rhino, my model had been saved.
Then I could not repeat it with the same task I was previously doing.
So I have been on alert for it, but to my disappointment, I was unable to isolate the steps to reproduce it.

Having the whole computer reset or shut sown is very alarming, IMO.
Please email me the file directly.
Thanks again, Fred.

Sincerely,
Mary Fugier

Mary,

The file was uploaded to your upload site, but I have attached it to this email
One thing to add about the previous crashes - working with the 4 viewports active one in render mode the other 3 in wireframe

I have been keeping google drive paused, given the issue with drop box.

I just had another shutdown this time working on a file that is exclusively 2D , file size 6.4mb, it does include hatches.
The only think different this time is I had opened about ten small .dwg files in Rhino prior to the crash.

PHA-1 3D K-1.3dm.zip (11.1 MB)

Hi Fred,
The latest link worked. Somehow I never got notified or forwarded it.
Thanks for reattaching your 3DM to this thread.

Do you get any messages for the Mac OS that your system is running low on memory?
When you opened the DWG’s, did you save them as 3DM’s?

I will keep trying to duplicate the crash.
If I can’t, I will ask if there is another else we can have you do.
I appreciate the additional details.

Sincerely,
Mary Fugier

Mary,

no notices that memory is low
Right now it says rhino is using 4.96 GB I have 5 small 2d files open checked again and now 5.81GB it just creeps up
closed a file went down to 5.77GB

yes I save dwg as 3dm before inserting into 3dm

Does sending the crash log help?

Hello all,

I’m having a very similar issue, but exclusively with the materials palette. When I open the palette, by selecting Render > Materials, my machine kernel panics every time (after beachballing for a moment).

Here’s the dump from Rhino on version + my machine. Please let me know what else I can provide!

@robotconscience Does this happen with every model, even a new empty model, or just with a particular model? Have you created any custom materials? Any idea how many?

@marlin yep, every model! I’ve made about 10 custom materials, but not married to them. Is there an easy way to get rid of them and try without?

@robotconscience When you select Render > Materials in the Rhino menu, normally a second window opens. Does this window appear for you or does your machine panic before that happens?

I suspect that one of the materials you have might be causing this problem. I want to get a copy of everything Rhino on your computer to see if I can replicate this.

  1. Quit Rhino if it is running.
  2. In the Finder, hold down the Option key and select Library from the Go menu.
  3. Select the Application Support folder.
  4. In the Application Support folder is a folder named McNeel.
  5. Right click the McNeel folder and select Compress “McNeel”. A McNeel.zip file is created.
  6. Email that zip file to marlin@mcneel.com and mention this discourse conversation.

You can try deleting the McNeel folder to see if Render > Materials still causes a panic. You still have the McNeel.zip file to restore the folder contents if necessary.

Hi Fred,
I just wanted to give you an update.

  • I have downloaded your model. I opened 3 additional models of mine.
  • Then I began to edit many of your materials, sliding material sliders, adding bump
and environment textures, … and more.
  • I could not get Rhino to lock up or get my system to reset.

I guess I am somewhat disappointed!
I have alerted @dan and @marlin.
Feel free to send any additional crash logs or details on the current state of this issue.

Sorry for the issue.
Sincerely,
Mary Fugier

Hello! I have a student whose Rhino 6 (Mac) keeps crashing whenever she goes to the Properties: Material’s panel to change the transparency of an image (imported with the “picture” command. This usually takes my computer a couple seconds; however, her Rhino starts with the spinning wheel and gets stuck. We’ve had to force quit several times now…

What could the problem be?
