Missing feature in Rhino (PLEASE READ)

i am a user of Rhino, Zbrush, Maya, 3DS Max, etc…

they all an option to export a single file for it’s UI, keyboard shortcuts, pop-up menu, UI color scheme, etc…

Rhino 5 is the only software in CAD world that doesn’t do this.

my wish is to see Mcneel to please make it a reality in V6

who else agrees with me?

You are aware of RUI files?

I agree it could be better handled, in V6 some of this will be addressed I believe. However, I think there will always be a few files to keep track of, given the ability of Rhino’s interface to be customized.

I suspect the toolbars will always be in one file (.rui), and most options in another (.ini). It’s mostly that way today, however, there are some stragglers, such as user-created templates, custom scripts and plug-ins that you still need to collect and transfer yourself.

Perhaps there will be a sort of “Rhino migration tool” someday…

The position of my windows (toolbars, Layers tab …) are often reset even when using the same screen configuration from one session to another. It is really time consuming to recall and reposition toolbars and tabs. I would appreciate a function “save user interface (name)” and “load user interface (name)”.

i agree Alan

thanks for agreeing with me

Alan, if you right click on the Rhino icon, and choose Run as Administrator, set things up as you like (no other Rhinos running!) and then close and reopen Rhino normally, does this layout stick?

thanks,

-Pascal

My Win7 user is set as administrator.
Usually the layout sticks from one session to another.
When closing Rhino files, I pay attention to be sure that the last Rhino file I close has a correct layout.
The configuration of my 3 screens is fixed.
I loose my layout 3-4 times/week.
I am not able to understand the reason yet.
In the meantime a function to save and load a layout would very warm welcome.

Yes, but what I am asking you to do is specifically use ‘Run as Administrator’ - that is not quite the same thing - and set things up as you like in Rhino, close and reopen normally . It may or may not help, but it is worth a try.

Hi Jean,

I filed something a while back that I think describes what you’re after. I agree it would be nice but I don’t know if it’s 1, possible given how all of these preferences are written currently or 2, high on the priority list. I can give you the feature request though to make asking about it in the future easier.

@JohnM has it on his list right now and might have more to add.

This is a big project and is on the list for Rhino 7.

thank you JohnM and Mcneel for making this a possibility

i can live with what we have now. but would be a blessing to have this feature in the near future

Fortunately for me it doesn’t happen as often as you, but it does happen with annoying regularity. The reason is simply, that the toolbar/workspace stuff is full of mysterious bugs which nobody is able to solve.

I’ve given up posting about it or even getting enraged by it, at this point I just sigh and go about fixing the stuff once again. Just a couple of minutes ago, I opened Rhino and I got a “root element missing” message at the command line (the message is actually rare), and my toolbars are all messed up again, docked in the wrong places, the command help is open (I never have that) the command line has gone to the top (mine is always at the bottom) etc.

And EVERY time (without fail) that I make the slightest mod to my toolbars - not talking about adding buttons, but just doing something as simple as modifying a macro or script in the button editor - I can be assured that it will be messed up on the next opening of Rhino.

I don’t often complain about this stuff - I have in the past, but it just looks like the illness isn’t currently curable - so there it is… Fortunately, the illness is simply chronic and not terminal…

I posted a question about Rui files some time ago. They are limited in their use from the answers I got. I know my concern is with 3rd party plugins (TDM says it is a problem with Rhino) but it is along the same lines of wanting to be able to create and save a workspace. I loose my layout every time I have to restart Rhino.

I have ended up like Mitch…just learning to live with it.

Hi Mitch, all

Huh … then I have to think I’m quite lucky.
I only run the Save open toolbar collections button when I edit something in the toolbars and usually (not always) things go smooth.
… As long as I only open one Rhino session, that is …

Of course ( ? ) I’ve been fighting against the toolbars for a long time (and several Rhino versions).
I just try to use as few toolbars as possible, usually building large custom toolbar instead of using standard smaller ones.
This way restoring the workspace (when needed) does not take much time ( I also have not to try to remember a lot of toolbar names and positions … )
… And obviously I save backup copies of the collection file

… Maybe when (and if) Rhino will move to some kind of cross-platform graphics in the future, things will get better …

Cheers

I use a barebone config for Rhino, no sidebars, no visible toolbars at all. All I have visible are a few docked Panels and Osnap+Filters docked to the left and right of the command promt. It’s pretty amazing what Rhino 5 can do with this minimal set of ingredients – typically after hard crashes. Promt moved to top, promt not visible at all, wrong panels docked (Help Viewer), panels in wrong places, Popup Toolbar lost. I never encounter anything comparable in other programs.

Yep, I get those, except for the prompt not visible and the popup toolbar lost. The Help viewer coming up is common, means it’s trying to load it’s default panel config. I usually end up with just one panel group (normally I have two) and the layers panel (which is the lower of the two docked on the right side) gets thrown in with Properties (on the top). Again, it looks like it tries to set the panel config to default.

I have toolbars docked next to the command prompt as well. I am wondering if this is actually the cause…

–Mitch

Hi Mitch,
the disappearing mmb toolbar is also a consequence of an effort to reset things to default. It’s the only custom toolbar I have and I have saved the workspace to a rui. Every now and then I find that workspace unloaded and the default one reopened instead, together with sidebars and tabbed toolbars (which I never use). Obviously In that default workspace my named popup can’t get found either.

done, it has been indeed stable for 4 days. Today, the panel with my Layers, Named views, Bongo tabs has disappeared. Layers tab has migrated to the panel with Properties tab. Toolsbars are ok
I have worked on only one project these days.

Yep, that’s one of the typical symptoms. --Mitch

Mitch, do you also have plug-in panels like Bongo in the mix?
